Start of La Jolla streetscape construction pushed to January

The La Jolla Community Foundation’s in-development streetscape project, which has been in the works for years, recently took two steps forward and one step back.

The streetscape project is designed to revitalize Girard Avenue. Phase 1 of the plan would renovate Girard between Prospect and Wall streets with improved lighting and seating as well as more street trees and traffic-calming measures.

Overall, the project would add 63 new benches, 49 new trees, 51 lights and 9,100 square feet of public space. Phase 2 would then renovate Girard between Wall and Silverado streets with the same features.

The $7.43 million project has received state and federal grants, as well as private donations since it was introduced in 2021.
